Large-scale motor roads repair, construction and reconstruction works are being carried out in Uzbekistan

In accordance with the Uzbek government programme on repairs of general use motor roads which have international status, in 2010 the following highways are to be repaired: Tashkent — Kokand — Andijan highway, Navoi — Uchkuduk highway, Guzar — Nukus — Kungrad — Baynau highway, Tashkent — Chinaz — Gulistan highway. Besides, the government allocated 16 billion Uzbek soums (US$ 10.3 million) on improvement of road network in Kokand, Samarkand and Namangan.

The reconstruction of two sections of Guzar-Bukhara-Nukus-Baynau highway (A-380) will be carried out by two foreign companies: Posco Engineering & Construction (a division of South Korean steel works company Posco), which is responsible for reconstruction of a 91-km section, and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) state corporation, which is to reconstruct a 41-km section of the highway.

The total cost of the works is US $173.5 million. The contracts with the foreign companies are signed and registered with appropriate ministries. The works are expected to start in the second half of the year. The completion of the works is scheduled for the end of 2011.

Currently the length of motor ways of Uzbekistan is 146.4 thousand kilometers, including 42.5 thousand kilometers of general use highways. Twenty international transport routes cross the territory of Uzbekistan.
